Another great beach on St. Thomas is Morningstar Beach, a family beach with beautiful sand and the occasional surf. If you’re looking for more of a party beach Sapphire Beach is your go-to beach on St. Thomas. This is the beach where TV and and film commercials are filmed, but it’s not a typically crowded beach. One of the most popular attractions in St. Thomas is Coral World. There you can experience the beauty of life under and above the Caribbean Sea. You have the option to stay dry while gazing into the ocean from 15 feet under in the Undersea Observatory or you can take the plunge “moonwalking” through ocean gardens with Sea Trek. There are lots of more great options of things to do available at Coral World making it a “must see” while in St. Thomas.
Of course there are plenty of outdoor and water adventures in St. Thomas. You won’t have to look far for snorkel or fishing gear! There are all kinds of water sports located at various beaches on the island including great kayaking tours and numerous scuba diving outfitters based in St. Thomas. St. Thomas is full of culture and history. You will find a number of historic sites, museums and churches to visit. You might want to start with Fort Christian, a 17th-century fort that is the oldest building in St. Thomas. It has a small museum with old guns and displays that are perfect for learning the island’s history. Just across the street you’ll find the Legislature Building home of the territory’s only lawmaking body. If you’re interested in checking out a lot of historic buildings and homes be sure to visit Government Hill. You’ll find Hotel 1829, Government House and the Seven Arches Museum. Take the 99 Steps up to Blackbeard’s Hill where you will find Haagensen House, a restored historic home, the Inn at Blackbeard’s Castle and the Green Iguana Hotel which are both located in historic buildings. St. Thomas also has a couple historic churches to visit, the historic Frederick Lutheran Church and the historic St. Thomas Synagogue. The Frederick Lutheran Church was built in 1820 in a combination of neo-classical and gothic revival architecture has an elaborate bell tower and lovely stained glass windows. The congregation of the St. Thomas Synagogue dates back to 1796 although the building was built in 1833, it also has a sand floor to commemorate the flight of ancient Jews out of Egypt across the desert. Lastly, the Emancipation Garden is the perfect place for tired sightseers to relax and enjoy the scenery. The park was built in commemoration of the 1848 slave emancipation.
Charlotte Amalie is the heart of the island’s shopping scene. The stores are crammed full of fun merchandise and are located on the waterfront side of town. The stores date back to the 17th and 18th century when they served as warehouses filled with goods awaiting export. Havensight Mall is located at the cruise ship dock that’s filled with great shops. There are more than 40 shops where you can find almost anything – clothes, jewelry, watches, leather goods, candies, crystal, luggage and more.
